Marriage with a Russian woman. Some psychological aspects.

Not long ago in Moscow a press-conference named ‘Modern women’s emigration from Russia’ took place. There it was mentioned that the main reason of a tendency to marry a foreigner is not so much a low life level on the territory of the former USSR as a native model of a family crisis. Russian women in international marriages show readiness to give place for a man to be a leader in their family. It’s nothing but a necessity to hide behind a strong and at the same time democratic and noble cavalier. An image of a Russian woman is close to the ideal of western men. They are tired of an excessive independence of their countrywomen unwilling to compromise on their freedom and often oriented at purely partnership relations. As contrasted with them women from Russia value family traditions, care about prosperity and happiness of the family. Carrier and all the rest are important for them only to an extent necessary for a family hearth functioning. That’s why men look for Russian brides. Furthermore, a keen demand for ‘brides by mail’ is also influenced by beauty contests, where Russian women win first places which helps forward a forming of a ‘Russian’ appearance.

In our time of mass immigration a topic of international, intercultural and interreligious marriages became more actual than ever. However, all problems connected with it concern more Russian women in particular than their foreign husbands. Girls from Russia marry foreigners more and more often and go abroad or find husbands for themselves from among peoples of other cultures. At this they often quarrel with their parents, though their husbands’ parents also don’t always approve of such intermarriages. Thus, there exist a vast number of nuances of intermarriages at a psychological level in particular. We’ll try to illuminate some psychological factors which trigger questions with men most often.

1. For most of girls who contract a marriage with a foreigner it’s the second marriage (if of course to cut off a category of absolutely young ones – 18-23 years old). Having an already unsuccessful experience of coupledom with a man behind them, contracting a marriage for the second time, practically all the women revise their views on family and relationship questions. With what thoughts and feelings does a Russian woman marry for the second time? Read

2. An overwhelming majority of Russian (Ukrainian, Belarusian) women till 25 years old already have a child. It is conditioned by an early marrying age characteristic of Slavic countries and a common family model of a ‘Russian’ family. Probably, you are not scared of your fiancé having a child. However, we'll mention some advices of psychologists which can tamp some difficulties of mutual adaptation down.Read

3. You have a relationship with a Russian girl who is 10-15 and even 20 years younger than you are. You are serious about marriage but an age difference is confusing… What pitfalls exist in unequal marriages? Advantages and disadvantages as viewed by psychologists. Read

4.Psychologists have been already discussing the phenomenon of a Russian bride for a long time. Why do men prefer Russian and Ukrainian women anyhow in a role of their wives? Why do western women absolutely lose them when a problem is concerning a family, children and marriage? Read
